Mathildedal's Ruukki spinning mill was the first in Finland to be awarded the Golden Alpaca label

Ruukki's long-term work in the spinning mill on ecological, social, cultural and economically sustainable alpaca fiber production has been recognized in the form of the Golden Alpaca label awarded by the Peruvian International Alpaca Association (IAA). The organization has been in operation since 1984 and during these years 49 international companies have been accepted as members. The most recent is Ruukki's spinning mill in the ironworks village of Mathildedal.

The Peruvian International Alpaca Association (IAA) has awarded Ruukki's spinning mill the Golden Alpaca label. With this recognition, Ruukki's spinning mill has become one of the most internationally known companies manufacturing alpaca products. Included are e.g. companies from Italy, Japan and Australia.

The label is only awarded to products that contain 100% at least Baby Alpaca fiber. Baby Alpaca-level fiber refers to the fine-grained structure of the fiber, which is also suitable for a baby’s bare skin. In Finland, alpaca products are available in different levels of fiber and in different concentrations. Ruukki's spinning mill mainly uses Baby Royal alpaca fiber, which is much finer than Baby alpaca. The supply of such fine quality fiber is very limited and therefore large fashion operators cannot offer products of the same quality.

The mission of the Peruvian IAA is to provide the international market with very high quality, sustainably produced and innovatively designed alpaca fiber products. Alpaca comes from Peru and 80% of the world's alpaca fiber comes from Peruvian farms. 80% of these farms are still less than 100 alpaca smallholders. Part of Ruukki's spinning mill's responsibility work is to support the Peruvian indigenous people in alpaca cultivation and to ensure the implementation of ecology and ethics in alpaca fiber production. Ruukki's spinning mill partners in Peru include IAA and the Pacomarca Research and Breeding Center.

Alpha fiber also has excellent properties for Finnish conditions, as it is light, dirt and water repellent and regulates body temperature. Products made of fine alpaca fiber are suitable for all ages, from baby to grandpa, as alpaca fiber is inherently soft and hypoallergenic.

Ruukki's spinning mill is the only spinning mill in Finland specializing in alpaca fiber. The spinning mill spins yarn from its own alpaca wool. Ruukki's spinning mill also buys alpaca wool from other domestic farms. The shop of Ruukki's spinning mill is located in Salildo, in the ironworks village of Mathildedal. While visiting the shop, you can also see the spinning mill in the hustle and bustle and visit to greet Mathildedal’s village alms.

“During our visit to Peru, we met our partners as well as indigenous breeders. It was great to see how our own work has an impact on human and animal welfare on the other side of the globe. ”
